6v6 in Overwatch 2   01/04/25

Do you mind if I infodump some of my feelings on Overwatch 6v6 for a little while?

Awesome, this should give my boyfriend a break for atleast a day or two until im ranting about the sins of Kirikos ability design again for the fiftieth time.
For a many years now Overwatch has been both an obsession for me, becoming a major part of my life. Even when I am not interested in playing the game I am thinking about its characters, world and what remains of its lore. In essence Overwatch is just unfortunately very dear to me, whatever state the game is currently in.

Season 15 of Overwatch 2 brought the first competitive season for the recently trialed 6v6 modes.
The trials of previous seasons were very enjoyable and they did take up a majority of my playtime but they didnt quite embody the depth that has come with this recent addition oweing to its competitive setting.
I want to preface my discussion of this new mode with some context, I have been a staunch defender of Overwatch's forray into what it calls a sequel, it's far from perfect but I feel it still has the crisp and fluid gameplay that made it so popular in 2016.
One of the major stumbling blocks that contributed to the games poor reputation with a majority of video game players was the switch to a 5v5 model. At the time I was open to and grew used to this switch and the way it allowed for a very different style of gameplay, with an arguably higher skill ceiling, relying less on shield spam and crowd control abilities.
What season 15's competitive 6v6 season has taught me is that although there were some truly toxic people calling for the return of the 6v6 model mostly for nostalgia and contrarianism, we really did lose something in the switch to 5v5.

The dozens of 6v6 games I have played so far in the new mode between all three roles have had the franetic energy (and the frustrations) that made the original game so iconic and mesmerizing.
Perhaps its the dual tanks allowing for a more uniform distribution of pressure or the two more players presesnt in the map adding more inherent chaos to the games but this way of playing feels right. If you would like a more scientific explenation of the workings of Overwatch I would reccomend watching videos by Spilo, I am simply a very invested diamond player.
I find myself amazed how the simple implementation of open queue with a limit of two tanks feels so effective and how the community has mostly learned to build compositions including both tanks and supports in the past six years.

I will almost certainly continue playing Overwatch whatever format the game sticks with. I hope the game can learn from the chaotic fun that 6v6 has allowed to remember that what makes Overwatch fun is the dynamic and often chaotic interactions between its dozens of unique and memorable abilities and characters.
